Anthropic Reveals Claude AI Misuse in Weapons, Surveillance

The New York Times, NYT, reported that Anthropic's recently released report on AI misuse cases revealed these instances. According to the report, in May, a scientist used Claude for research on chikungunya virus mutations to be conducted at a military research institution. Infection with the chikungunya virus can cause severe joint pain lasting for months. The scientist reportedly pursued research involving repeated infections of live animals to increase the virus's harmfulness. While such research can be used for vaccine development, it also carries risks of being misused for biological weapon development. Jacob Klein, head of information at Anthropic, said, "We cannot confirm whether the purpose of the research was weapon development," but added, "The fact that a military institution is conducting such research is itself concerning." Additionally, a researcher residing in a region where Claude's use is restricted attempted experiments related to avian influenza. Anthropic restricts Claude's use in countries like China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba due to national security concerns. Anthropic has blocked accounts of scientists who attempted to bypass restrictions or concealed their research purposes. It also stated that it has strengthened safeguards against biological research that could be repurposed for military use.
