Music publisher Round Hill Music has filed separate lawsuits against Anthropic and Suno in a California federal court, accusing both AI companies of using copyrighted music to develop their artificial intelligence systems without permission. The publisher, as per a Reuters report, alleges that lyrics from at least 500 songs in its catalogue were used in AI training. The works include songs associated with artists such as James Brown, The Kinks and the Goo Goo Dolls. Round Hill is seeking damages in both cases and has indicated that the number of works covered by the litigation could eventually increase substantially. Anthropic and Suno face separate claims In its case against Anthropic, Round Hill alleges that lyrics from its controlled compositions were used to train Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, enabling the system to respond to user prompts. The publisher has made a similar allegation against Suno, claiming that the songs were incorporated into the training of its AI-powered music generation technology. Depending on the number of works ultimately included and the damages awarded, the publisher said its claims could potentially reach or exceed $1 billion. Anthropic and Suno had not immediately commented on the lawsuits. Publisher says it will take cases to trial Round Hill CEO Josh Gruss said the company intends to pursue both cases in court and seek compensation for the songwriters and artists whose work it says was used. The lawsuits add another front to the growing legal dispute between the creative industries and AI companies over the use of copyrighted material in training datasets.
